Roman and Viking England with Hadrian's Wall

Roman and Viking England with Hadrian's Wall

This trip starts in cosmopolitan London, Europe's largest urban conurbation, and brings us all the way to the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. The journey engages with life past and present exploring the Roman invasion of Britannia, their dealings with the Celts who lived there at the time, their spa and leisure towns, their barracks and military outposts and what artefacts they left behind. We'll be exploring the Roman cities of Chester (Deva Victrix) and York (Eboracum) which had the largest Roman armies stationed there in the almost four centuries that the empire controlled Britain. York, situated on the River Ouze, has a long Viking history dating back over 1,000 years and we'll be exploring the tremendous amount of culture this Yorkshire town has to offer, as well as a trip to the coast to experience life in a stateley home and fishing town. Continuing north to Hadrian's Wall, built under the Emperor Adriano, we'll make a trip to a site with tremendous physical evidence of the barracks, the governors bathhouse, the kitchens and the town grid, as well as north and south entrances. We'll explore the wall, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and continue into Scotland where we'll finish up in Edinburgh, another UNESCO site and one of the world's most cultured cities.
